Quartzite starts life as sandstone. Over millions of years, intense heat and pressure deep in the earth fuse its quartz grains together into one of the hardest natural stones used in kitchens. The result is a surface with the calm, elegant movement people love in marble, but with far more resistance to scratches, heat and everyday wear.
That combination is why quartzite has become one of the most requested stones in our North Shields showroom. It suits period homes and country kitchens just as well as contemporary islands, and because it is quarried rather than manufactured, no two slabs are ever the same. We know how to select it, seal it and match the veining across joints so the finished worktop flows as one piece.
Marble looks without the worry
Natural Veining
Soft, flowing movement with the elegance of marble.
Exceptionally Hard
Usually harder than granite, so it resists scratches.
Heat Tolerant
Formed under intense heat, so busy hobs are no problem.
UV Stable
No fading or yellowing in bright rooms or outdoors.
Quartzite or quartz? They are not the same
The names sound almost identical, but they are very different materials. Quartzite is a natural stone cut straight from the quarry. Quartz is engineered from crushed quartz bound with resin.

Quartzite worktop FAQs
What customers ask most often about quartzite worktops.
What is quartzite?
Quartzite is a natural metamorphic stone. It forms when sandstone is exposed to intense heat and pressure deep underground, fusing the quartz grains into a dense, very hard stone. It is quarried in large slabs, mainly in Brazil, and cut to fit your kitchen just like granite or marble.
Is quartzite the same as quartz?
No. Quartzite is a natural stone, while quartz worktops are engineered from crushed quartz mixed with resin. Quartzite has natural veining and every slab is unique, and it handles heat and sunlight better. Quartz offers a more uniform look and does not need sealing.
Is quartzite harder than granite?
In most cases, yes. True quartzite is usually harder than granite and is one of the most scratch resistant natural stones you can choose for a kitchen. It holds up extremely well to chopping, pans and the daily wear of a busy household.
Does quartzite need sealing?
Yes. Like most natural stone, quartzite has some porosity, so we seal every installation as standard. How often it needs resealing depends on the stone and how heavily the kitchen is used. See our aftercare guide for details.
Will lemon juice or wine damage quartzite?
True quartzite is far more resistant to acids than marble. Some stones sold as quartzite contain softer minerals, which is why we check every slab and tell you honestly how it will behave. Wiping spills promptly is always good practice.
Can quartzite be used outdoors or in bathrooms?
Yes. Quartzite is UV stable, so it will not fade in sunlight, and once sealed it copes well with moisture. It works beautifully for vanity tops, shower surrounds, fireplace hearths and outdoor kitchens as well as indoor worktops.
