She chose it in a 20mm thickness, and it brings so much texture and life to the room. The home is in West Lothian, just outside Edinburgh, so although our showroom is in North Shields, we were happy to make the trip for a kitchen like this. Here is a closer look at the material, the details and the finished result.
Marmo Antico has the look of a beautiful natural marble, with soft, flowing veins running through a warm white base. Because it is a porcelain, it brings the practical side too: it is heat resistant, stain resistant and acid resistant, so everyday spills like lemon juice, wine and vinegar will not etch it the way they can etch real marble.
The naturale finish is what really makes it. Instead of a high polish, the surface has a gentle texture that you notice under your hand, softer reflections and a warmth that suits a family kitchen. You can see how porcelain compares with our other surfaces on the porcelain worktops page.
Right above the backsplash sits a floating shelf made from the very same porcelain as the worktops. We box mitred it, cutting and joining the edges so the shelf reads as one solid block of stone, with the veining wrapping round the edges.
To hold it, we bolted brackets into the brickwork behind the backsplash, so the fixings disappear and the shelf looks as though it grows out of the wall. It is a small detail, but it really elevates the whole wall and gives a seamless, matching look.
The look of a beautiful natural marble, with everything that makes porcelain so easy to live with.
With a bold, marble-look pattern, the joins matter. We vein matched the whole kitchen so the movement in the stone flows naturally along the runs, round the corners and across the peninsula, rather than stopping and starting at every seam.
We carried the same look through into her utility room too, finished in the same material, so the two spaces feel like one. The utility did not make it into these photos, but it is every bit as good.

Marmo Antico is a porcelain surface from the Uniceramica range by Brachot, one of our stone suppliers. It has the look of a beautiful natural marble, with soft veining running through a warm white base, but it is a porcelain, so it brings all the practical benefits of porcelain to the kitchen.
A naturale finish is a textured, matt surface rather than a high polish. It has a tactile feel you notice under your hand, softer reflections and a warmer look, which suits a kitchen that is lived in every day.
For many kitchens, yes. Porcelain gives you the look of marble while being heat resistant, stain resistant and acid resistant, so lemon juice, wine and vinegar will not etch it the way they can etch natural marble. It does not need sealing, and a quick wipe keeps it clean.
We cut the edges of the porcelain at 45 degrees and join them so the shelf reads as one solid block of material, with the veining wrapping around the edges. On this project it was made from the same porcelain as the worktops and supported on brackets bolted into the brickwork behind the backsplash, so it looks seamless.
